Starting Therapy Part 2

How do I find the right therapist?

By Amber Dwinell

Often therapists will have bios on their website that gives an overview of their practice and approach.  Here are some questions to ask yourself as you are reading. Compile your answers to these questions and you may find some of your answers pop up in the therapist’s bios.

How do I feel as I read?

e.g. Connected? Warm? Understood?

What is my communication style?

e.g. I like feedback delivered gently. I want to come to my own conclusions and insights through guided questioning. If this is you, you may see words like Strengths based/ collaborative/ person-centred in the bios.

What are my therapy goals?

e.g. I want an assessment to determine whether I meet DSM criteria for a Mental Health diagnosis. You may see words like ‘Assessment’. Generally, therapists that specialise in the MH area you are curious about will be the best for this.

e.g. I want to know more about myself, and I am open to going back in time to look at my childhood and connect past coping patterns to the present? If this is you, you may see words like Trauma- informed, relational, attachment focussed in the bios.

e.g. I want to stay in the present and focus on strategies to help me right now.  If this is you, you may see words like Solution-focussed, strategies.

Once you book in with a therapist, they may offer a discovery call where you both can ask questions to further assess fit. You may need a few sessions together before you decide whether the therapist feels like the right fit. If you are starting to feel like the fit isn’t working, or you are feeling unsure about the process, let the therapist know. You may be able to work it out together, or they can help you with a referral to another therapist.
